The power of storytelling for health impact

In health communication, scientific evidence and data are often used to convey important information and advice about behaviours that impact health. However, facts alone may not be enough to engage and convince people. That is where the power of storytelling comes in, and why it is a core part of the Communication for Health (C4H)approach used in the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region. Drawing upon insights from social, behavioural and communications sciences, C4H leverages the full power of communication, including storytelling, to achieve public health outcomes.

Effective communication in health care: implementing a national training programme in Ireland

In the latest edition of its Effective communication in health care webinar series, WHO/Europe will be focusing on the Irish experience of implementing a new national communication training programme for health-care staff. The initiative, led by Winifred Ryan (Lead, National Healthcare Communication Programme, Health Service Executive, Ireland) and Eva Doherty (Associate Professor and Director of the Human Factors in Patient Safety training, research and assessment programme at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland), was developed in response to patient feedback from Ireland’s first-ever national patient experience survey.
